Meshtastic Technology
Meshtastic is an open-source, off-grid communication platform that uses LoRa (Long Range) radio modules to send text messages, GPS locations, and other data without the need for mobile networks or the internet.

Why Meshtastic for Paragliding Safety?
In Bir and the surrounding Dhauladhar Range, mobile coverage is often unreliable or absent. Meshtastic provides a way for pilots to stay connected, share positions, and relay messages even in remote airspace.
- Long-Range: 5–20 km typical in hilly terrain, more with good antennas.
- Mesh Network: Every device repeats signals, extending coverage.
- Low Power: Runs for days on a small battery pack.
- Open Source: Free to use, adapt, and improve.
The Meshtastic App
The Meshtastic mobile app (Android & iOS) connects to your LoRa tracker via Bluetooth, allowing you to:
- View your own GPS location and that of other pilots
- Send and receive short text messages
- Configure device settings (channels, power levels, etc.)

Using Meshtastic with the Bircom Community
Our pilots configure their devices to the agreed community channel settings, allowing seamless communication during flights and quick coordination in emergencies. If you are visiting Bir for paragliding:
- Bring your Meshtastic-compatible LoRa tracker.
- Install the Meshtastic mobile app on your phone.
- Ask in our Telegram group for the latest community channel settings.
- Test your device on the ground before flying.
Important Safety Note
Meshtastic is an excellent tool for communication and tracking, but it is not a substitute for proper training, safety planning, or official rescue channels. Always fly within your limits and follow all local regulations.
